There are news that the Shia community in Kurram Agency fought for over a year with Taliban invaders, ultimately compelling Taliban to withdraw, though almost every family lost one or more in the battle. Similarly, in Swat some civilians took up arms and personally fought the terrorists to protect their lives and property.
