Finally, President Asif Ali Zardari has opened up on ex-president Pervez Musharraf and his resignation prior to Zardari’s stepping to power. At an iftar dinner hosted for journalists on Monday, Mr. Zardari told media people that Musharraf resigned after a deal was cut between him and the political stakeholders, both domestic and international.
Zardari’s revelation, or confession, did not give much detail of the deal or the names of stakeholders but the admittance has indirectly implied the fact that Musharraf will not be tried for high treason under Article 6 of the constitution no matter how much the opposition groups, especially the PML-N, demand his trial. Journalist kept asking meaningful questions afterwards and the President kept avoiding them. In response to the question whether General A.P. Kayani was among the said deal’s negotiator/guarantor, Mr. Zardari almost snapped back by saying, ‘why do you want to bring him in this debate?’ Mr. Zardari said that the PPP never recognized Musharraf as the country’s president. The President also denied the claims of political corruption among the existing leadership, calling such allegations ‘propaganda’.
No unusual reaction was exhibited by the major political parties in the country to Zardari’s disclosure of the deal, except the PML-N which demanded of the President to make it clear who exactly had been part of the said deal. PML-N also reiterated its demand for trying Musharraf under Article 6 for high treason.
