Intense heat and stuffy weather combined with annoying power outage have been plaguing the lives of people in summer and the only relief for the masses comes in form of rain. Heavy rain showered various parts of the country during the last 48 hours and continues to cheer people up in certain areas. For the residents of Karachi, however, rain also brought along the angel of death.
Heavy monsoon showers almost flooded the cities of Karachi and Hyderabad on Saturday, breaking off the persistent hot and close weather. About 85 to 105 mm of rain was recorded at several places in the two cities, interrupting life and damaging infrastructure. Electric supply was cut off as the torrents snapped dozens of electricity cables. News sources reported the death of at least 18 people in Karachi while over 150 were injured.
Rain also poured on a number of other places in NWFP, Sindh, Punjab, and Kashmir. On Monday morning, heavy showers were reported from Hangu. However, NWFP’s provincial capital Peshawar remained dry and hot while power outage literally tore down the daily lives in some parts of the city. Federal capital Islamabad too did not receive heavy showers, though it got a little rain on Saturday. But the temperature dropped to the cooler end due to rain in surroundings.
