To develop the country’s social sector, Pakistan has signed three agreements with the World Bank. The agreements, worth $350 million in total, were signed by the World Bank’s Acting country director Said Al-Habsy and Pakistan’s Secretary Economic Affairs in Islamabad on Tuesday, September 15, 2009. The money will be spent mainly on improving education, boosting productivity in the education sector, management of water resources, and strengthening social protection. Of the $350 million, a hundred million will be spent on improving teaching and increasing access to higher education within the country. Another $200 million agreement will go into providing support to poor families and enhancing social safety. The third agreement of $50 million focuses on water resource management in the Sind province. It aims at enabling farmers to increase agrarian yield through better management of water. This project follows the previous successfully-executed projects of water resource management in Sind.
