President Asif Ali Zardari has ruled out India as a military threat to Pakistan. Instead, Mr. Zardari thinks, Taliban are the real threat not only to Pakistan but also to the whole world. In his recent conversation with EuroNews, Zardari said that India and Pakistan had both their good intentions; both being ‘realities’ while Taliban are an international threat.
This upbeat expression regarding India follows shortly the president’s brief meeting with the Indian premier Manmohan Singh in Moscow (Russia). Also coming along is the statement of Interior Minister Rehman Malik who spoke of extending unconditional support for India in probing the Mumbai Attacks of November 2008. Critically speaking, Mr. Malik’s statement did carry a condition – that India assumes a positive stance toward Pakistan’s efforts in resolving the matter. Nevertheless, the frigidity on both sides seems to have thawed for a moment.
While hopes for the success of tranquilizing Indo-Pak hostility continue to live among the public of both countries, it is reasonable to think of the coming times when considerably more will be spent on improving the socio-economic condition in both countries as against the ceaseless strengthening of arms and military against each other. One thing still needed on the scene is TRUST. And the caring Indian/Pakistani can be heard crying after it, ‘Where are you?’
