In multi-ethnic populations, issues keep rising over cultural rights, sometimes making interesting news and debate on popular media. One such issue arose recently in New Mexico, USA, where a hotel owner pressed up on his Latino employees to make their names more ‘American’ than Spanish.
The employees took offence and there was a public display of protest along the road. The CNN discussed the issue and, interestingly, popular CNN host Rick Sanchez argued that there is nothing offensive about asking someone to Anglicize (or Americanize) their names in order to be better understood. Rick, who is also of Spanish descent, gave the example of his own Spanish name and the simpler version ‘Rick Sanchez’ of it. He conceded, however, that the urge for changing names must not be made out of bigotry or racial prejudice.
Another CNN anchor, however, came really hard on the hotel owner, calling his demand outright ‘ludicrous’. The video (attached to the post) shows the brief discussion over the Spanish community’s take on names.
