India to Introduce World’s Cheapest Car

The current global financial crisis has been particularly hard on the auto industry throughout the world. While car production has plummeted in the US and most of the world including Europe, India’s auto-industry has planned to stay steady against the economic challenge by manufacturing the world’s most inexpensive car – the Tata Nano. Expected its official launching next week, the Tata Nano is priced at only 2000 USD. The Tata Nano, which is due out in the dishy shape of a jelly-bean, will be cheaper than some hi-fi laptops and especially targeted at the middle-class customers in the South Asian region.

Though the news of Tata Nano’s advent is a cheerful one, certain challenges face the product’s sale and marketing. The initial sales are expected to remain low due to the notable cut in people’s earnings following the global economic crisis which has affected the Indian job market most severely in the past 6 years. The company also foresees a limited production in the first year – no more than 50, 000 cars – due to problems with the functioning of the manufacturing plants. The sales of Tata Nano will, therefore, be limited by production and not following the customers’ demand.

Despite the initial challenges, the Tata Nano is likely to be the winner in the long run, especially when the economy starts recovering from the depression. It is yet to be seen how the environmentalists plan to protect the atmosphere from loads of vehicular emissions coming with large-scale sales of as affordable a car as the Tata Nano.

What do you think is going to happen to the price of gas when suddenly 1,000,000 more people can afford to buy a car instead of taking their motorcycle or bycicle? Not to mention the severe increase in emmisions you will see (literally...)

I totally agree with your concept of analogy with respect to prices of oil and people being able to afford cars.

I think what we need are not cars, just some sort of a calesa where a horse is used like in the old times of London. The environment, the people and earth might have a good time without all the extras cars bring like pollution.

This car is made for "India". Please look up videos on India and I'm sure they are not likely to be driving these vehicles or any vehicle at great speeds. The congestion in the city alone will make sure of that. This car is very practical for their environment.

With that said, it's pretty obvious that this car will not make it to the U.S.

Not bad. Beats what Indian families are doing now: loading up the motorbike with a family of 4, 5 or even 6. Nuts!

I think It fits Indian condition not necessarily that of the US. I Hope with a little design (body, more powerful engine, bigger tires etc.) change, it can compete in the US mini car market.

Ever been to India?
Famlies of four are on a singe motorcycle everwhere in dense traffic and highways.

This car is not only much safer then that but much more comfortable for the famlies.

And yes, I realize that by North American standards this car would pass zero safety tests.
But for India this makes sense and I give my cudos to Tata.

Tata do know a thing or 2 about building tough vehicles, what do you think those trucks people drive in the himalayas are?
anyway did you know tata is also the 5th lastest steel producer in the world (that must help cut some costs possibly).
and tata is the worlds second largest tea producer (as in drinking tea).

I appreciate Mr Ratan Tata for keeping his promise to roll out a 1 lakh car. However, there are 2 concerns we need to look at: 1. What effect would it have on the already worsened traffic situation? with every bike owner aspiring to own a Nano, one can well expect the problems it is going to create in metros/ semi urban cities. 2. Safety? with the engine in the rear, there is very less room for making the front more safe as compared to the from mounted engine cars. With the government least concerned about the surface infrastructure & the dream/ right "to own a car" , what we'll see is a massive "traffic frustration".

I think it's great that Tata can provide a new car to people who normally can't afford it. It's better than having to commute on a two-wheeled automobile that doesn't provide you with protection from rain or dust storms or such things. Also if it does do as it claims and beats a two-wheelers with emissions, I would rather see them driving around than a two wheeled bike

It is nice to see that a powerful man thinks about the average person and their need to be mobile and affordable
The rich arrogant people think they have all the rights to pollute the world and the poor should sit in a corner and watch them have fun
I hope the exhaust from these cars blows smoke in there arrogant faces

For what this vehicle is and for what it is designed for, I feel this is one of the best examples where need and design were met in one.

I do wonder how fuel efficient these cars are and if there will be an unwarranted increase in emissions going into the atmosphere, especially in an overcrowded region of the world as India.

Would these small care cause undue stress to respiratory impaired individuals?

I read that many on here don’t want this this car to exist at all considering walking or motorcycles a better way to transport people. While that may be so, western countries are fast to criticize developing countries who are trying to come up with a product for a problem and this seems more selfless than selfish.

As Americans, we tend to be judgmental towards other countries. We tend to gag at a gnat but swallow a camel.
