Yet another terrible incident of suicide bombing shook the country yesterday (Friday, June 05, 2009) when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a mosque in Hayagai Sharqi village (Dir) along the Dir-Sheringal Road. Forty people are reported to have been killed and over 70 injured as a result of the bombing.
According to news sources, the bomber entered the mosque a little before the Friday prayer began and let the explosives go off when he reached near people, leaving after the prayer, at the entrance. This happened during a scuffle when some of the people became suspicious of the bomber and tried to capture him. No one has claimed the responsibility for the bombing so far, though it is thought that the attack signifies revenge by the terrorists who had been made to leave the area by the local residents.
The mosque’s building was damaged heavily and debris is being removed, with the hope that no more lives would have been lost as a result of burial under the material. Strong condemnation of the incident has come from political leaders and high officials of the country, including the president and the prime minister.
