Textile industry in Pakistan is facing a persistent decline in cotton production for the past more than four years while consumption of cotton products is on a rise. India on the other hand is seeing an increase in cotton production over the same period of time.

Cotton Production Declining in Pakistan, Rising in India

The statistics of cotton production and consumption in different countries across the world were recently revealed by the International Cotton Advisory Committee, showing a steady decline in cotton production in Pakistan from 2.194 million tons in 2005 to 2.08 million tons in 2009. India on the other hand increased its cotton production from 4.097 million tons in 2005 to 5.34 million tons in 2009. Accordingly, India’s cotton export has increased while that of Pakistan is facing difficulty. China too has increased its cotton production while its indigenous consumption has decreased, allowing a greater margin for cotton export.

The increase in cotton production in India and China is said mainly to be the result of cultivating pest-resistant varieties of cotton seeds, which have not yet been introduced in Pakistan. On the other hand, Pakistan’s cotton cultivation has declined due to several factors ranging from cultivation of traditional varieties and via traditional methods, poor marketing, and failure in making timely payments to cotton producers.

Pakistan is more focused to spend money on terrorists and weapons rather than agriculture.

Our country has to rethink about agriculture. If this would continue, we could be in deep trouble.

Karim Sahib,
Kudos for posting on an article on agriculture sector and thanks for appreciating the hard work of farmers from Indian side.Basically, in India too there is no Agriculture policy of the State or Central Governments.Yes, banks provides loans to the farmers, then some Govt agencies provide fetilizers and seeds. Then irrigation department supply canal waters to the farmers.Deptt. of electricity is also there to supply power for the tubewells.
But all this comes for a certain price and the small farmers are least beneficial of these facilities.Govt. don’t have crop policy as to which part of land should be used for any specific crop. Some crops are grown in bulk resulting no buyer in the market.Credit can be given only to farmers who by their sheer hard work raise crops despite all adversaries.
