Pakistan :

It is something rare in Pakistan but not so new in the PCB to resign in protest and this time it is Younis Khan, captain of Pakistan cricket team, which recently lost the Champions Trophy 2009 in South Africa. Attending a session at the National Assembly’s Standing committee on Sports, on Tuesday (October 13, 2009), Khan rejected the accusations of match-fixing and deliberately losing to other teams and tabled his resignation on spot in an emotional display of protest. Captain Younis Khan Resigns in Protest

The accusations brought against the team’s captain included deliberately losing their last group match against Australia so as to put India out of the series as well as deliberately losing to New Zealand in the semis. Younis Khan strongly rejected these allegations and said that he could never do such a thing. He even could not think of it and has found it hard to face his family on account of these baseless allegations.

The dramatic scene was stretched as PCB chairman Ijaz Butt at once handed the resignation back to Younis Khan. Moved by the scene, the legislators also expressed their view that losing in the Champions Trophy was not the result of match-fixing. But Khan declared that he was a Pathan and would stand by his word. Younis expressed resentment of the biased way in media had presented the team’s performance in the past few months.

I feel Yunis Khan has been ill-treated by zealots who dont know A B C of cricket. Pakistan winning after scoring 205 runs against autralia would be a doubtful outcome not the Pakistan's loss. Yunis was better captain than Shoaib Malik. Afridi has yet to prove himself but he himself is inconsistent with his own performance would make him less appealing as a skipper.

The match against Australia was deliberately lost by Pakistan to deny India entry in semifinal. The start by Pakistan was very slow despite Shahid Afridi coming early.Indians are the greatest fools on earth not to understand Pakistani psyche

On cricketing perspective, I dont see any harm in not allowing your enemy country to enter the knockout stage. If I have enimity over the other club, and I have a chance to knockout them out, I will certainly do. This is pure sports, only a sports person would be able to understand. Like in Chess if your queen is at risk, you can very well lose a camel. Pakistan knows how strong India is, and hence they dont want to take a chance. The ultimate is winning the cup, playing your cards to perfection. But pakistan played very badly against new zealand, especially afridi, when you have not taken the powerplay, you could have taken singles and wait for the power play to begin, instead he wants to hammer every ball for a six, when this guy will grow up. If he still needs time, he is not fit to play any sport.

It is after all a game .. somebody loses somebody wins. It was much better performance than us. I feel sad for PAK cricketers who have answer the fundamentalist/non secular regimes.

I dont think there is anything wrong with deliberately losing to Aussies for blocking India(even if that is the case). It is their game plan and they executed it very well. But if they had fixed the semi-final then only it is an issue.

Ilhan, do you think it is fair for pakistan, or any team, to deliberately lose a match if the team’s own position is safe but by losing it can oust an opponent (like India in this case?)

I am also feeling sad to see the fate of Younis Khan. He is very gentle player. He is one of the role model for the modern players. In his young age, he had quit T20 when everyone wants to quit Test and play in T20 to earn more money. God save Younis.

I think you guys have brought up an important issue (thanks to you all) viz whether it is fair to affect another player/team that is part of the competition by playing loose game. If we allow it as fair, then we need to agree that sports too is a political battleground. But then we face the question whether the spirit of sports is or isn’t corrupted/denied by inclucating such a political sense.

Sports should be played and matches contested with the truest spirit of competence and competition rather than trying to avenge political enmity in sports ground.

What Younis Khan did was expected of him because that was the only way left for him to prove himself loyal to cricket.

Thanks Ikram, I feel the same on the question of deceitful performance to kick out one’s opponent. This shows malice not competition. I think sports is about healthy competition, not a sick one.
